What if Your Place is the destination?
I'd like to think we're ready for anything at our house (I know better, but I'd still like to think that). Preps are in line, and being added to weekly. We have our own chunk of 20+ acres (15 wooded) with a spring-fed pond full of fish. There's only so much you can do to prepare for anything, and I think we're "pretty ready".
Anyway, our log home will sleep 12 comfortably. We have had some "low-level" discussions with family, and they know if anything happens, they should head here. We'll do what we can here, as a group. Therein lies the question. Let's use my in-laws as an example. Out of our "inner circle", they live closest to a city, and are the first that I would expect to see. Both are in their late 60's. They drive a mid-sized SUV. Think Chevy Trailblazer. They can make one trip from home to here. Vehicle space is obviously limited. In order of importance, what do they pack? Empty the cupboards of food? Hand tools from the shed? Firearms and ammo? Extra clothing? A little bit of everything? I know ther is no "correct" answer. Just a little something to think about. Not much different than if you were bugging out, but if someone was bugging to your house, what do you want them to bring? |
Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
Food, Firearms, Ammunition (the right calibers, that is). Then handtools, batteries (rechargeables/chargers if they have them), garden tools. Oh yeah... as many gas cans as they have (preferably full).

Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
Short answer: EVERYTHING
Longer answer: I hope some of my family doesn't show...they aren't prepared at all, have refused to do anything over the years--are in a serious state of denial--and would be relying on ME for everything. Then they would probably start takin' charge, bossin' me around, and become a threat to ME:...naw, best they stay away.:smokin: |
Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
Silverbullet,
Maybe the question you should ask is what they shouldn't bring. Attack the question from the other direction. If you have set up the place you are talking about then you have already done a lot of preparing. Electrical power tools will be almost worthless. Evening dresses will be worthless. Financial documents will be worthless etc. Just a thot SB |
Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
I suppose I am lucky... or not... My in-laws live right next door. They have 2 guns with no ammo (that I know of), and no significant food stores (that I know of). Of course they do own the house that we live in, and the surrounding 10 acres...

Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
My suggestion would be clothes: Pants, shirts, jackets, sweaters, underwear, socks, footwear, etc. My guess is you haven't got enough of that stuff to support visitors for an extended period, and they would be hard to "make" on your own.

Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
VERY good point--wouldn't want a bunch of NAKED people camped out in my yard...:D

Re: What if Your Place is the destination?
I would like to suggest a seperate designated storage blg. that is vermin and fireproof, secure.
All expected guests would have an alotted space inside with sturdy shelves and labeled totes. Make a general list of essential gear for storage... maybe even some of that 30 year shelf life Mountain House food. Have your guests pre-stock this blg. with their stuff. Good luck |
